Custom Woodworking
In 1990 Miller Pipe Organ added a woodworking division, Miller Custom Woodworking. A full time cabinetmaker, Steve Miller (former woodshop foreman) was already on staff doing the woodworking for organ building projects. The addition of this new business allowed us to utilize our large wood shop and equipment when it would have otherwise gone unused. During rebuilds we use the wood shop for organ-building but in between rebuilds and during tuning seasons the wood shop is kept busy with custom woodworking jobs.
Today, master cabinetmaker Ryan Goff, assisted by Kevin Hooker, Lynwood Schweickert and Craig Bayens, enthusiastically tackle unique projects of all kinds, from square toilet seats to an antique fire engine firewall reproduction to complete kitchens. The woodshop staff also does custom bookshelf and entertainment center installations. With a large number of stately, turn of the century homes in our area, Miller Custom Woodworking is often rebuilding doors, windows and reproducing period moldings.
Miller Custom Woodworking has also been called upon to supply church furnishings. We have built pulpits, lecterns, communion tables and many other furniture items. Let Miller Custom Woodworking handle your next woodworking project.Contact us about your Custom Woodworking needs.
Regular Organ Tunings
Our tuning system keeps your organ in the best possible tune throughout the entire year! The majority of our clients choose a regular schedule of tuning visits. This schedule keeps your flue and reed pipes in tune with each other under varying temperature conditions. Regular visits allow us to detect and repair various minor problems with the organ mechanism before these problems become emergencies. Some clients choose quarterly visits, some a semi-annual schedule, and others prefer three visits. Other tuning and service arrangements are available to fit your individual scheduling needs.
Quarterly Visit Schedule Easter - Important musical season for many clients May/June - the air conditioning is turned on September - between heating and cooling seasons Christmas - the heat is turned on
Semi-Annual Visit Schedule May/June - the air conditioning is turned on Christmas - the heat is turned on An alternate schedule is Easter and Christmas.
Scheduling to Fit Your Needs We will schedule our regular visits to fit your programming needs. If you notify us by the following dates, we will make every effort to accommodate your request.
Easter by Feb 10th May/June by April 1st September by August 1st Christmas by October 1st
Tuning visits include... A Complete Tuning-A full tuning of all pipes in the organ to the average of the current pitch. We do not skip low octaves, celeste stops, or any other ranks. All pipes receive the necessary attention to insure a quality tuning. Repitching of the organ is available with advance notice. This may incur an additional charge.
or...
A Touch-up Tuning-A complete check of all flue ranks to locate out-of-tune notes. Touch-up tunings also include a complete tuning of all reed ranks and any out-of-tune flue ranks. We will repitch significantly out-of-tune divisions if the temperatures are normal for the time of year.
Mechanical Systems Check Our service team thoroughly inspects your instrument on each tuning visit. Items checked include all couplers, reversibles, indicator lights, swell expressions, crescendo mechanism, tremulants, chimes and other percussions, reed regulation, and the combination action. We will perform minor repairs on the service visit and notify you of additional repair work that is needed. By special arrangement, we will inspect and, where necessary, lubricate the organ blower and change the combination action memory batteries when needed.
Report Card After each tuning visit, our service team completes a report card detailing what was checked, tuned and repaired. They also include their comments and observations. This card is left on the organ console so you will know what work was done. Saving the report cards provides you with an accurate, up-to-date record of all service work and repairs completed during our tuning visits.
911 Service
We put trained craftsmen at your call for fast, professional service when you need it. Our full-time office staff and 24 hour-answering service make us easy to reach at any time. We will make emergency service calls when requested. Over 95% of all service calls are answered in the week in which they are received. All calls are handled within one week when requested. You can count on us to be there when you need us. Give us a try!
We will also help you resolve your organ problem over the phone when possible, so that the organ can be used. Some companies will not do this, but we believe that with guidance from our professional staff, there is often someone in your church who can temporarily repair the problem.
Insurance Estimates
All of our clients receive regular estimates of the replacement value of their pipe organs for insurance purposes. This allows you to protect your investment by maintaining adequate insurance to cover the replacement of the organ in the event of fire or other disaster. We send this information three times a year with our quarterly newsletter. Our service teams have the replacement value with them during your tuning visit, or you may request it from our office at any time.
Quarterly Newsletter
The Principal Chorus, our quarterly newsletter, is mailed to all of our clients and prospects. In addition to regular features and articles, it includes a partial list of our upcoming projects and news about our staff. It also serves as a means to communicate tuning schedule information to you. Included in some issues is a reply card to advise us of your future scheduling requests.
The Fine Print
Billing: Hourly rates are computed to the nearest quarter hour. Clients who use us on a regular basis are billed at a lower rate than clients who call periodically. Our local clients may request a fixed rate tuning agreement, payable in advance. Out-of-town clients in our ten state service area are billed for an equal share of the travel time and expenses accrued during road trips. Each client is also billed for the amount of time spent working on their instrument(s).
